Public peeing is many a man’s best friend. This fellow however has always had a problem peeing around anyone. I like the joke it plays on me and the falling water theme. I also like that it is the water that falls from within us.

What is here is hardly a manly pee. Does anyone remember the moment in the book “Jaws” when Ellen Brody is lying in bed listening to her husband Martin take the first piss of the day? That was a manly pee and this one is nothing like that. Matt Harris used to say that he could pee forever when he was high. The next time I peed high I knew exactly what he meant. He also said:

“I just become more me when I’m high.”

Matt, when I knew him, was a really funny guy. He was also a song writer who wrote songs on a Casio with chords that it seemed he had created. I liked Matt’s music. It seemed like music that he owned. I am interested in where I am and have stopped most of the comparisons to where I was. It is one thing to remember your past and still another to objectify that past with sentimentality. Even the movie seems like it was years ago. While talking to my wife I realized that it is very seldom now that I will be driving in the van and arrive at my destination with that feeling of “How did I get here?” I drive nails and enjoy working with the tools in my hand. I want to build songs like houses. I want both lives and I am as free to have them as I will allow myself to be.

A: The part you are presently working on.

((newstereo))

Liar!

Did you ever feel like falling water?

Ok, so as usual, I lied. “Falling water” will be the two word title of the last song on this album. I walked around a good part of the first two weeks with the feeling that I needed and wanted to cry. That feeling made its way into this song. I was thinking about sobbing and I pressed record in an attempt to capture the sound of sobbing. I took the first thing I got and put it into the song I rationalized that the song was called “Feel” and so emoting was appropriate. This whole album seems to be devoted to such big feelings and how, if not properly handled, they can spiral out of control.

The precarious energies of persons living and dead played out with poignant passion and spectacular alacrity.

Release: “Feel”

((newstereo))

Song 81 “Ever” (II)

Liquid You – Track 3

Release: “Ever”

((newstereo))

Song 81 “Ever”

Liquid you - Track 3

Drama head has gone to bed and left me here to write.

The new Tom Waits thing came out and that is nice. Oddly what I expected but also some surprises. The front cover is my favorite thing about it. He has made himself some kind of interesting room.

Ever to never land is fun to sing. I have done two sessions with it and will try a third tomorrow. I have an initial version which I am playing on the stereo out in the front room. I am singing along with this and have also been playing around with a hand powered mixer but I can’t seem to get what I want. As it stands now it sounds like it does not belong partially because the rest of the thing is on such a groove. John re-cut the film yet again for this showing and it is my favorite cut yet. The audience of about seventy people seemed to enjoy it as well. Some of Tolias music was incorporated in this go round. John and I got into a drunken quarrel at the party after the show. I am sure it was started by me. I want to stop being angry with him for being unable to connect. I want to do away with hard feelings.

In other news I am having a breakdown of sorts which I do not find interesting. It is the reason I have written very little in these notes. I call it a breakdown of sorts because it is more like a balancing act between well and unwell. I am struggling to realize my vision of a life in art outside of the spotlight or rather I am struggling to realize I have a life in art outside the spotlight. That art has a life in me. I think I began this project of ((newstereo)) out of fear. And I have noticed that the further I get from KITUS the sadder and angrier I become. The whole thing feels very generic and smacks of regret which I think is for the birds. How can I come to truly appreciate this chance to be here working? How can I keep the faith that life and purpose are one and the same?

The other reason I have not written much in these notes is that I have put this blog in a big old box marked MUSIC RELATED. With ((newstereo)) isn’t it all music related? Isn’t life the production? Are these not working songs?

((newstereo))

Song 79 "Do"

Liquid You – Track 1

Release: “Do”

((newstereo))

We were finished before we started.

It is All Hallows Eve

Happy anniversary newstereo.net

This week I stripped the site down to simple. No Davydov music made the score and nor are any ((newstereo)) tunes present. They were not made available in time. Instead inexpensive music from a website was used. Music which in my opinion is in no way better than what Tolia was working on. The overall sound of the film is full of audio errors which I have the tools right here in front of me to correct. I was not asked to help in this capacity despite my offering. John is a loner who wants to direct movies. I don’t get him and I do not understand finishing something poorly just to get it done. I see this type of thing in carpentry all the time. For a (little) minute there the whole thing felt like KITUS. I was excited and encouraged to be so and then I was excluded from the process. The whole second half of the experience was extremely frustrating. As for my acting, I guess you will just have to see the damn thing to find out.

Turn the page.

Fittingly we have also wrapped up the album “A man walks into the bar” with song number 78. Lithuania.

((newstereo))
<img width='1' height='1' I awoke at 3 AM and ran microphones out the back door to the edge of the woods which lie behind the Schoolhouse. This is the time of night when there is only the occasional car which you hear long before it passes. I recorded about 12 minutes of night tone each hour thru 6 Am.

The first hour is deep night and you can hear sounds from the farthest away. These sounds include distant highways which though not audibly understood to be what they are lend a throbbing to the silence which I think will work well in the context of the film. The characters are trying to reach the outskirts of civilization under cover of night. The sounds around them should remind us that they are not quite there. While inside monitoring the recording my cat Irene who used to be quite the all night outside girl was glued to the area around the speakers. Her eyes were very wide and she was listening with ears at attention. Cats kill me.

The second hour brings rise to place. The characters have arrived. This is as far out as they will get. The sounds are wrapped tightly around us as they bounce off the water which is forming in the air. There is an intimacy to this environment which says you might just be able to get away with murder.

Hour three is the return to civilization represented by the rise in sound itself. Bird’s bugs and louder activity in the distance are waking up the world. The secrets of last night are exposed. This day is approaching and you are not the only one here as it seemed. Breaking daylight is visible thru the ears.

In the interim between the three tonal recordings I started the car, broke sticks, did a little singing and smashed three watermelons with a shovel. What fun!

Then it was off to work house building.

After work I had a letter from Anatoly in my inbox. He doubts his own capacity to achieve the type of sound John is after but did send an mp3 which I forwarded to John. It will take quite a leap of faith to go with Tolia for the music of this film. I still cannot help feeling that what he would ultimately bring to the picture would be worth it.

-b

((newstereo))

“Even Steven” (III)

A homemade movie by John Ebert

I spoke to John yesterday about simple musical metaphors to convey to Anatoly and together we came up with these:

*White water rafting on a river of molasses.

*Cabaret music seeing itself in a fun house mirror.

*An airplane coming apart under stress in slow motion.

As I understand the discussion between my in-laws and Tolia went well. The characters are from a small city and are fairly ordinary folk. I came on board as an actor and therefore decided that the project was something separate from ((newstereo)) and did not belong in these pages.

As noted above John Ebert is the Director and Writer of the film about a gynecologist who after a serious lapse of judgment becomes involved in a twisted triangle and a prisoner in his own home. John has impressed me time and again with his artistry behind the camera and his commitment to this film which can only be described as having a shoestring budget.

I really believe in this type of work. Making something from next to nothing is a great passion of mine. It is the reason I have taken my time with audio, adding a new piece of equipment from time to time, gaining knowledge and releasing songs I recorded along the way. I believe John’s requisition of video equipment and filmmaking knowledge has been a similar journey.

In movie making obtaining quality footage and quality audio are understandably two separate jobs. The skill sets and duties involved are simply too technical and time consuming for one person to handle. On our film it became evident early in shooting that a great deal of the audio would have to be left for or redone in post production. I hadn’t acted in nine years and had my hands full with that end of things but kept feeling like my experience with recording was a likely and natural asset to the completion of the film.

I approached John about wanting to help in this area and he accepted my offer. My duties will include the recording of sound effects and foley. Beyond this I gave John a copy of this month’s song “Remember me now”, which had been written with the characters of the film in mind, and copies of my collaborations with Anatoly Davydov. This has led to an interest in having Anatoly score the film and for Tolia and me to collaborate on songs.

As I write, my in-laws are in Visaginas Lithuania meeting with Anatoly and telling him about the project. I think the thematic nature of scoring a film is right up his alley and have my fingers crossed that he will be interested.

I am continually surprised at how effortlessly one thing can lead to another if only you let it.

I hope my computer holds out...

((newstereo))

Some numbers mean more...

Number System

Henceforth the links to new songs on the ((newstereo)) homepage will be designated by Song Number.

This takes some of the weight off of titles and provides for a more manageable main image.

Also if you know what number we left off at it will be easy for you to check the site and see we have advanced by one.

Releases are still currently happening once a month and on the first.

((newstereo))

Song 71 "Remember Me Now" (III)

Waddle and Daub - Track 5

Release: “Remember Me Now”

Scar said to Wound “Don’t worry someday you will be tough like me”. The answer, if I desire to maintain my commitment to this project, must come in the form of an improvisatory and chance based hit and run song. I cannot say that I did not see this coming. There is only so much time to devote to work that does not pay the bills and since I am the type of artist who feels like nothing is ever finished it becomes just as well to cut this process off earlier than later. As the lady said “One rock is as good as another to wreck upon” and a moment to rock is better than no rock at all in a process which is as much about continuity as product.

Thanks for listening.

-b

((newstereo))

Song 71 "Remember Me Now" (I)

Waddle and Daub – Track 5

Remember the two hour song.

This working may make the album.

This thing has spawned from that damn movie. I was a deeply moving joke at the time and scared with good reason. The footsteps in the dark could be heard distinctly thru the single strength glass which had lost most of its glazing. A savage was born in this house. I know because he pulled up one day in his dump truck.

In the spirit of this revival, last week, something really strange happened. Panchia and I heard a barking outside and close. Three wild dogs had a deer cornered against our fence. They saw P and me and the dogs scattered while the deer with the rack bolted for the woods. He did not get any further than the rusty river. The dogs had collected themselves and surrounded him. I went inside for the only gun I have.

I pointed the cordless finish nail gun in the air and fired.

“Pap!”

No reaction.

I fired finish nails at them.

Nothing.

I went back in to find something with which to make noise and spotted the tambourine used on this song.

The rise and fall of sound cut the deep blue night air and the dogs stopped barking.

Soon they skulked away.

The deer looked at me for a while from the 3 inch water and then trotted off into the woods.

Song: “Gently”
Release Date: 02/01/06

((newstereo))

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://newstereo.blogspot.com/2005/12/song-70-gently-i.html' title='Song 70 "Gently" Last night I ran this recording thru several laps and a big top trying to turn the sound into something acceptable. Today I recorded new tracks and dumped the Sony recording altogether. (Well not altogether it is no longer recognizable.) I am not sure where this one is heading. It could be the album, Misstereo or neither.

Song 23 is “One country world tour”. Tolia Davydov has made 4/4 music out of my supposed 4/3. The archive files began arriving yesterday. This one has a bit of a country bent which makes the title seem more fitting as country has, yet again, gone international. This one will be Misstereo and I will announce its release right here.

((newstereo))

Song 69 "ELLovee/Moday" (V)

Waddle and Daub Track 3

ELLovee is officially Moday.

The elevator in Huntington West Virginia is still prevalent but the footfall from the jobsite has been dropped. The writer admits that she is he and we are in deed and misdeed walking from heaven to earth whilst holding the warm hands of science.

Song: “She walks with genome”
Release date: 11/01/05

((newstereo))

Song 68 "Windooty" (I)

Waddle and Daub – Track 2

This track gets a bit of Bilhorn and of course Tammy.

Instruments odd disaster came with little warning except the desire to change clothes.

Our Pop Chop continues as we tickle the stars.

Song: “Windooty”
Release Date: 12/01/05

((newstereo))

Sales Blitz

Juggle that dustspeck!

In a world where brand loyalty is commonplace, one product emerges that you definitely do not need.

((newstereo))

This free music has no inherent value. In a flash the world’s heartthrob has sauntered from grace, watch ‘em sway as they swarm toward the nose on her face.

Song: “Sway”
Release Date: 07/01/05

((newstereo))

Song Study (III)

Sing it again and again and again…

Say the same thing ten times. Learning

One aspect of this music I am noticing more and more is what happens when you leave the room where it is playing. Individual parts become prevalent depending upon where I am in the house. I suppose this is true with all music but here, with all parts played by voices, something different comes to the front depending on the distance from the source. This seems to be true even in the muddiest mass of vocals I have done so far “Olive, I’ve green eyes”. I did not set out to create music with an active ambient component and nor will I strive to make this a music of hidden messages but it is interesting to note.

((newstereo))

Group Dynamics

Partners in crime

Dealing with people you will have an occasional conflict. Artistic conflict is good because it can sttttrrrreeeeeccccccchhhhhhhh you. Ego conflict is difficult because people who may not be listening to each other much stop listening altogether. Internal conflict can arise from dealing with people who are in the middle of an ego conflict and this is where our story begins:

I took off my glasses and moved into my other visual world. I say “my” because I cannot be sure that any one else sees like this. The conflicted voices come more into focus even as the faces wash out. Seeing might be a metaphor here. Conflict may be as well.

Somewhere beyond this moment is another. Be there now without sacrificing here. Here is little more than a time zone. Further back still, music trills and spills out into tomorrow’s tributary – Today. And subject matters less in a large body of water. Your head is one big barometer.

((newstereo))

Rolling!

Action!

Speak louder and then take a powder!
Seeing, as being, can lean toward deceiving.
An old door needs repair.
A new door wouldn’t dare!
(Boyd laughs loudly)

CUT!

FADE TO:

((newstereo))

If one of those bottles should happen to fall...

468 bottles of beer on the wall.

I think a monthly release is just perfect for me. This time frame for constructing a song arose because ((newstereo)) is a profitless pursuit. Time is spent and money is made away from music. The time to create songs is limited. A month is enough time to find the time to work.

But a song a month is also good if suddenly the time/money scale tips to the favor of time. In this scenario, I suddenly have more time than I know what to do with and I can spend that time getting to know a song better.

If I continue to release a song a month and I live the average male lifespan, I will release another 468 songs before my death in 2044.

((newstereo))

Fairground Art

Stand by your clown.

…after all he’s just a clown. Here is a dork that doesn’t.)

I am studying the nature of song by singing without an instrumental anchor. These songs begin with words which lead to tunes. These tunes adopt a tempo and before you know it you are singing a simple song. You can take the music out of a song but you cannot remove the tune. Tune and song are inseparable. Lose the words, if you like, but a tune is hard to get rid of. Tempo has a dialogue with tune. It is a wordless dialogue which is willing to take words along for the ride.

(Any jackass can sing without music.)

This must have been how it began.
