"Behind the Glass"

I am not a Magician. I am just learning.

I picked up an interesting book called “Behind the Glass”. In it engineers and producers from various schools of musical thought are interviewed about their craft. I think it is a great read for the home recordist who is on their own, without the benefit of a mentor. It definitely gives one a sense of solidarity with those who worked in the studio when the studios were king. Many of the interviewees are quite impressed by the audio they hear coming out of home studios. The book is heavy with hit makers, and bills itself as such, but once you get beyond this there are many simple good ideas about the art of capturing sound.

Oldstorio - Newstoria - Igloria

Oldstorio is a story you once told yourself.

“The power of mirth.”

“The age of hilarious.”

“The elements of smile.”

Newstoria are the stories you are listening to now.

“Smoothing a long scowl.”

“Extracting grin from growl.”

“Re-Sampling hymn and howl.”

Igloria will be making the promised breakfast and then taking an ether walk.

Oldstorio - Message

All the old stucco is restored and refaced.

"((newstereo)) is the official representative of these songs.

Songs have been around for a very long time. Stop someone in the street of any old time and ask them "Do you know a song which goes Hum-hum-hola-rip-ola-rip-um?" They will solemnly swear that the story of songs and people is too long to tell. We agree and ask only one thing of the songs we present to you here - we ask these songs to sound like themselves."

Oldstorio

All the old plumbing is torn out and replaced.

We lost a story.

"Newstereo grew up in a small, purportedly ethnic, railroad town in Delaware. He made up songs to sing into the stacked steel pipes that were chained to the train cars. One day, while singing, he saw a Clown who had a Laboratory in his mouth. His eyes were closed and he was bobbing back and forth between pipes. The faster he moved the more sound would overlay so he pushed his legs hard to hit pipes at different levels. Somewhere in the sweat and swell he became aware of extra sounds.
ClickPopWheezeWaverTitterTwills
He opened his eyes and there was this unusual clown.
They have been singing together ever since."

We gained a library.

Window on skyline drive

“I go to bring me friends to the wedding!”-Popeye as Aladdin

I have been re-encoding all the songs. The website is starting to make a lot more sense to me. It needed an Mp3 Archive. Soon the production notes will link to the lyrics page of a song as it is being worked. Simplicity is right around the corner. What can I do to muck this up?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exclamation points are right!

Gadzooks! We suddenly have 2000 megabytes of space at our disposal. This unforeseen upgrade from our internet provider will allow us to make available all of the songs from the very beginning. This means a total site reconfiguration. We shall be lighter online and easier to handle on this end. This is good because the demands of my small business have been stepping it up of late. This summer I will build my first house. It will be all I can do to find the time to write and record. I have always liked the idea of having all the songs available on the site. No diary is complete unless it can be read from beginning to end. There is much to do.

I heard it through the phone line

Now hear this!

I am more interested in collating sound to create music than I am in creating aural soundscapes. Newstereo is working music, which goes well with all types of work. By this we mean it is background music to accompany the sounds of a working life. How often it is that everyday sounds line up perfectly with what we are listening to! How capable we are at hearing when we listen! How important it is to wear ear protection when running power tools! Spring is coming and with it - exclamation points!

Song 60 "BAck TrAck" (VII)

Beat sounds can be on/off by MUTE button – Track 1

Back Track is a love song to songs. Not much left to do here except listen and write the next one so we can stay ahead of the game and feel comfortable about our transitions.

Song 60 "BAck TrAck" (VI)

Beat sounds can be on/off by MUTE button – Track 1

This song is different than any I have done so far. For one thing, I am singing pretty high, and now, hovering over that high voice, are the paragraphic pipes. The pipes are best when recorded in stereo, as they are here. They have the same sound I hear when singing into them. It is a fluctuating bouncing sound. I like it. No more talk of finished songs. They are finished when they are released.

Song 60 "BAck TrAck" (V)

Beat sounds can be on/off by MUTE button – Track 1

Work continued today on “BAck TrAck” in the bare wood attic of the schoolhouse. This triangular room has the smoothest sound in the house but I rarely record up there because it has been temporarily sealed off. It was a good short session recording with the paragraphic pipes.

...and more promises

One more round. One more time.

I promise to enjoy the internet for the changeling it is and make change an integral part of online existence. Why is change heralded with such fanfare? The mistake is to see the internet as an extension of television. Televison resists change. Formula is the eulogy of form. Sound and light are working over time to pour change over us. Listening to a piece of music in the car, on a rainy day, we are hearing something altogether new. Windshield wipers, the direction of rain striking the car, the shape of the cabin, passing splashes and innumerable other fine details have become part of what is coming out of the speakers. We cannot sense the same thing twice. Moments factor in everything to become unique. The universe is alive with change. The internet exemplifies this with boundless mutability.

Promises, Promises...

Never a rose garden!

I promise, when I go, I will just disappear. No long goodbyes and reasons while I drag my heels rolling up the tent. No lingering on the threshold muttering about how long we tried and our good intentions. No passive aggressive comments directed toward anyone including myself. It is amazing how many times I have run into the remnants of peoples big ideas on the internet, which did not take off for whatever reason and all that is left of them is some bizarre goodbye. You will get none of that from me.

I promise to make music that I find interesting. My wife told me that people should design websites that reflect who they are. I think she is right. The internet is only as interesting as people are willing to make it. Advertising is everywhere and websites that think they know what you want to be looking at and listening to are a dime a dozen. The Wild, Wild Web is big enough to document it all and then some.

I promise to write songs that contain private jokes, jargon, vernacular, insects, dreams and drudgery.

I promise to not restate these promises if I can help it.

Song 60 "BAck TrAck" (IV)

Beat sounds can be on/off by MUTE button – Track 1

I added a way back track of Paragraphic Pipes. They suggest music in parts. Suggestive music seems to be what we are going for. I think “Cooly’s Caper” accomplished this best so far. It was very simple with a little musical nudge every now and then. I should leave this song alone because I am starting to get nervous about it. The room tones ride waves of proximity effect. Or is that waves of phase? It is a stitch away from pleasant. It is time to break down.

Song 60 "BAck TrAck" (III)

Beat sounds can be on/off by MUTE button – Track 1

Freezing frames we have us a song! And our first set of Paragraphic Pipes which were chemical welded in and then cut out!!!

Strange Renovations is a struggle and a success. I like being in my own business and am starting to get used to the long hours. Like staying up late, they put you in a hazy place which is a good channel for songs. I think this one is done and we move onto Mr. and Mrs. May. (Who had a way with words?)

Song 60 "BAck TrAck" (II)

Beat sound can be on/off by MUTE button – Track 1

Something is dancing in between these voices. The Harmonica makes a come back in the van. Why not? We have a brand new album. Songs can be pretty peculiar. This one is saying leave it. It is no coincidence we start with “BAck TrAck”.

Song 59 "Olive, I've green eyes" (VIII)

I Hope Your God Delivers – Track 7

Release of “Olive, I’ve green eyes

It will take a while to sort out all we have learned on this one. An extensive workout has left it a little thin, so it is a good song to sing along with. Your voice may be just what this song needs to give it body and luster. Forgive me, I am typing this in the shower.
